Association of British Orchestras

Area Leader in Creative Musicianship & Improvisation

Royal College of Music £48,730 – £55,822 per annum, pro-rata. Closing date 11 October 2021
JRN: 705-21

The Royal College of Music (RCM) is one of the world's greatest conservatoires. Our excellence was recognised by the 2021 QS World University Rankings, in which we ranked as the top institution for performing arts in the UK for the sixth consecutive year, and top in Europe for second year running.

The College is seeking an experienced musician and educator to provide outstanding leadership in the area of musicianship and improvisation.

The College’s undergraduate programmes are evolving to reflect greater emphasis on applied musicianship and creativity. Our redesigned musicianship curriculum places student creativity at the centre of learning, equipping students with an understanding of musical materials in and through theory and practice. We view stylistic composition and tonal improvisation as vital tools for developing creative and flexible musicians.

You will be an experienced creative practitioner, ideally a composer and/or classical improviser, with outstanding communication skills. You will have substantial previous experience of undergraduate teaching and assessment in musicianship, stylistic composition, analysis, and/or tonal improvisation. In addition, you will be confident using technology in innovative ways to support student learning

You will understand diverse student needs and be able to devise engaging and inclusive learning activities for students at different levels. While RCM’s courses have a focus on Western classical music, we expect staff to draw from a diverse range of musical practices in their teaching and be mindful of representation in their choice of composers and repertoire.

Working in collaboration with the other Area Leaders and the Heads of Programmes, you will make an important contribution to teaching and curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The RCM offers world-class teaching facilities, a creative and supportive environment for staff development, and a generous allocation of research time for active researchers.

We especially encourage applications from Black and ethnically diverse musicians, who are currently underrepresented in this area of the College.

This post is offered on a permanent, part-time (0.6FTE) basis and is available from January 2022.

For full details of this position please read the Applicant Information Pack, available to download from the RCM website.

CVs without an application form will not be accepted. Please ensure that you include the Job Reference Number when submitting your application.

The RCM is committed to being an equal opportunities employer and to promoting a diverse and inclusive environment for all our staff, students and visitors.
