The BBC National Orchestra of Wales occupies a special role as both a BBC broadcast orchestra and the national symphony orchestra of Wales. The BBC National Chorus of Wales is one of the leading mixed choruses in the UK. The Orchestra is generously supported by the Arts Council of Wales and is proud to work with an outstanding group of conductors.
As one of the six BBC Orchestras and Choirs, the Orchestra and Chorus have a busy schedule of recordings, broadcasts and concerts for BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru, BBC Films and BBC television. Education and learning is also at the heart of our work, developing innovative projects to increase accessibility to classical music and engaging with communities across Wales.
Main Responsibilities:
The Assistant Stage & Technical Manager works closely with the Stage & Technical Manager to take responsibility for the day-to-day staging, logistical & technical operation and management of the Orchestra’s activity and studios in Hoddinott Hall and on the road. The Assistant Stage & Technical Manager will report to the Stage & Technical Manager, as part of the Operations Team, delivering smooth running of rehearsals, concerts, recording sessions and external events in the UK and overseas. The post will require a strong working knowledge of orchestra stage layouts and driving the orchestra truck. The post will regularly require working during unsociable hours (early mornings, late evenings and weekends) with the opportunity to take TOIL.
The following experience is essential for this position:
- Experience of live stage management.
- A detailed knowledge of orchestras including an understanding of orchestrations, musical instruments and the appropriate ways to layout an orchestra;
- Experience of the methods and practices employed in safely and carefully handling, packing and transportation of valuable musical instruments, some being large and heavy;
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to establish effective short and long term relationships with a wide range of people
Desirable Experience:
A clean C+E (HGV1) driving license and current Driver Qualification Card, with significant experience of driving HGV1 in the UK and abroad (including dealing with international carnets and customs)
or
A willingness to train to gain the above qualification
