Association of British Orchestras

Chief Executive

Academy of St Martin in the Fields Competitive and commensurate with a position of this importance. Closing date 04 March 2022
The Academy of St Martin in the Fields is one of the world’s finest chamber orchestras, renowned for fresh, brilliant interpretations of the world’s greatest orchestral music.
Through unrivalled live performances in the UK and on tour, and a vast recording output of over 500 releases, the Academy has gained an enviable international reputation for its distinctive, polished and refined sound and is known and loved by classical audiences throughout the world. Founded by Sir Neville Marriner, the Academy is now led by Music Director and virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell and retains the collegiate spirit and flexibility of the original small, player-directed ensemble which has become an Academy hallmark.

The Academy is seeking a new Chief Executive to set the overall artistic vision and business strategy for the orchestra. Amongst other duties, the Chief Executive will hold responsibility for artistic programming; financial and administrative management; development of commercial work and concert engagements; fundraising and income generation; ensuring equality, diversity and inclusion are integral to all aspects of the Academy’s work; and building and maintaining internal and external relationships.
The ideal candidate for Chief Executive will be a senior leader in the classical music industry or the wider arts sector, with a sound knowledge of orchestral repertoire. They will have strong leadership skills and a track record in motivating, inspiring and empowering teams to work successfully together to deliver a vision and mission. Business acumen and entrepreneurship, and a track record in generating substantial income from both private and public sector sources are important. The ability to build on the unique heritage of the Academy to develop a compelling and relevant vision for the orchestra as an industry leader in the evolving classical music sector and digital era is essential.

The Academy of St Martins in the Fields is an inclusive employer and is committed to improving diversity in our organisation. We encourage and welcome applications from individuals from all backgrounds, particularly those who are underrepresented in the cultural sector.

The deadline for applications is Friday, 4th March at 5.00pm.
