Overview

The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra seeks a highly motivated Development Manager to play a key role in our fundraising activities. We are looking for someone who is passionate about world-class musical performance and our impact for everyone in our communities, self-motivated and ambitious, a skilled negotiator and relationship builder, with excellent verbal and written communication skills with a proven, demonstrable record of success in fundraising.

The chosen candidate will report to the COO and work with the Music Director, other Directors and the external Development Consultancy firm.

This is a permanent, full-time role. The holiday entitlement is 20 days plus 8 bank holidays. Salary according to experience.

The position is based in our London office, but occasional travel to Oxford will be required. Some evening and weekend work will be necessary for concerts and fundraising events, but an in-lieu scheme is in place to cover out of hours working.

Job purpose

Working with one of the top orchestras in Europe, the successful candidate will assist the Music Director and Orchestra Founder in generating fundraising revenue during the Silver Jubilee Anniversary in 2023 and beyond. They will serve as a fundraiser for the Orchestra and its programmes by developing of mid-level gifts and increasing the number of regular members and donors through prospecting, cultivation and stewardship, while supporting such activity through writing individual proposals and proposals for Trusts and Foundations.

Key responsibilities and tasks

• Cultivating existing and potential donors making gifts to our Friends scheme
• Cultivating donations from prospects and donors up to £10,000 through contact introductions at meetings and at events
• Developing engaging print and online copy for event literature, invitations, and the Orchestra’s website
• Coordinating and executing fundraising campaigns

Stewardship & Research

• Researching current and prospective donors using WealthX and other research resources
• Producing detailed funding proposals, grant applications and reports and financial summaries

General support

• Taking notes and compiling briefings for meetings
• General administrative duties

Abilities & Qualifications

Essential:

• Highly developed interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain good personal relationships
• Passion for classical music, particularly orchestral music
• Excellent organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail
• Good IT skills
• Ability to juggle multiple tasks
• Strong communication skills
• Strong copywriting skills
• Confident and motivated team-player

Desirable:

• 4+ years development experience in the arts or another sector, but candidates with no development background but transferable skills are also welcome
• Experience in research
• Experience of working with databases
• Degree in music
