Director of Learning and Engagement

Based in London at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, the Philharmonia creates thrilling performances for a global audience. Through its network of residencies, the Orchestra has a national footprint, serving communities across England both in performance and through its extensive outreach and engagement programme.
As part of the senior leadership team, the Director of Learning and Engagement will develop and sustain the Philharmonia’s strategy for Learning & Engagement, ensuring that the company remains at the forefront of innovation and creativity in its work with young people, community groups, emerging artists and audiences.
We are seeking a strategic thinker who strives for innovation and sustainability, and who is passionate about impacting on the lives of people and communities through music in creative, meaningful ways.
Working with the Chief Executive and senior management colleagues, the postholder will ensure that Learning and Engagement activity is integrated into the Orchestra’s artistic programming, maximising opportunities for collaboration and strengthening key areas such as UK residencies and digital project work. The successful candidate will also be expected to identify and realise sources of funding for new education, learning and engagement activities.
Amongst the qualities you will need to possess are:
• Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) with the ability to communicate convincingly to a diverse range of people.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build long-term relationships.
• Ability to think creatively and with an entrepreneurial approach to income generation.
• The ability to plan and prioritise workloads, setting short term, medium-term and long-term objectives.
• Self-motivated and proactive, capable of working under own initiative.
• Ability to work successfully within a team and collaboratively across all the departments within the organisation, particularly at a senior level.
