Opera North is seeking an inspirational music tutor to teach enthusiastic young musicians within our Young Musicians Studio on a Saturday morning at Trinity Academy in Leeds. Applications are welcomed from experienced specialist tutors able to lead dynamic and engaging classes in one or more of the following topics: musicianship, theory, improvisation and composition.

Saturday Music School tuition hours are 0930-1300; additional hours may be available at other times dependant on business need.

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Opera North Education Tutors deliver a year-round programme of high quality and engaging composition, improvisation and /or practical theory tuition within the Opera North Young Musicians Studio on a Saturday morning.

BACKGROUND
Opera North is England’s national opera company in the North and one of Europe’s leading arts organisations. The Company is committed to producing work of the highest quality that excites, challenges and entertains. Through its Education department, Opera North seeks to encourage people to explore the work of Opera North; to connect with communities and inspire each generation through opera and the artistic resources of the company.

In Harmony Opera North is a long-term music programme which launched in the spring of 2013 at Windmill Primary School. It now takes place at six primary schools and one secondary school in Leeds and Halifax. In Harmony Opera North seeks to deliver an inclusive music education, alongside performance opportunities, to encourage young people from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds to engage with the arts and, through doing so, benefit from a range of personal, social and musical outcomes.

Young Musicians Studio is part of the Pathways progression activity is intended to support children and young people who demonstrate the potential and enthusiasm to develop beyond the first access In Harmony provision. The Saturday Music School Pathway meets weekly during term-time. It offers classes in musicianship and theory, improvisation and composition as well as ensembles and small group instrumental tuition taught by specialist tutors. Supporting the development of a strong sense of community will be an important facet of the programme, alongside promoting musical excellence and the opportunity for committed and enthusiastic young people to realise their musical potential.

DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
 As part of a team of tutors, plan and deliver composition, improvisation and/or practical theory and musicianship tuition at the ON Young Musicians Studio.
 Ensure monitoring and self-evaluation of teaching and learning methods, to track progress of all participants and develop best practice at an individual level and across the wider team.
 Collaborating with colleagues, develop the curriculum for the assigned areas of study.
 Offer musical and programme-related support, advice and expertise to children, staff and parents where appropriate.
 Support the Opera North Education team in providing knowledge and practical advice where needed.
 Attend communication, planning and development meetings with other staff and company representatives as required.
