Research Associate AHRC Project: Music, Migration and Mobility
Royal College of Music £33,409 per annum (pro-rated) Closing date 22 June 2022
The Royal College of Music is one of the world’s great conservatoires, training gifted musicians from all over the world for international careers as performers, conductors and composers. We were ranked top global institution for performing arts in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022.
The Music, Migration and Mobility project brings fresh methodological approaches to the study of the experiences, musical lives and subsequent impact on British musical culture of musicians who came from Nazi-ruled Europe in the 1930s and '40s. The project investigates and maps the journeys of approximately 30 musicians as they negotiated and helped to form aspects of British musical life in the post-war period. The project also probes the practical challenges of performing and mediating their compositions-which are defined by multiple trans-national cultural influences and traditions through a programme of performance workshops and concerts and explores the cultural value of this music for contemporary audiences.
The Music, Migration and Mobility Research Associate will be responsible for undertaking archival research in a number of designated archives in the UK, and possibly abroad in Germany and Austria. The focus of this work will be the contribution of émigré musicians from Germany and Austria to British musical life in the mid-twentieth century. The post-holder will also write biographical texts and gather data to inform performance workshops, the development of the project’s online resource and the project’s mapping project using ESRI Story Maps. The post-holder will be expected to present their research at conferences and author/co-author an article in a suitable peer-reviewed journal.
We are looking for candidates with the following attributes:
· You will have a PhD in music, history or a relevant subject area, or equivalent experience in research
· You will have good knowledge of mid 20th century European Musical and Cultural History
· You will have proven experience in archival research, creating data sets, interpreting data and writing research outputs
This post is offered on a part-time (0.4FTE) basis for a fixed-term period of 9 months and is available from July 1 2022
