Sparks Juniors Musicianship teacher

The Royal College of Music Junior Department (RCMJD) is a specialist term-time only Saturday school offering advanced training to musicians between the ages of 8 and 18. Students combine studying at RCMJD with their general education at their chosen week-day school. Students come together at the RCM London each Saturday for a tailor-made programme of individual instrument/voice/composition lessons, chamber music, orchestral and choral training, and general musicianship. Our staff are professional performers/composers as well as teachers and offer the highest standards of tuition and coaching. Most RCMJD students continue their musical studies at the RCM or other major conservatoires/universities.
Sparks Juniors is a collaboration between RCM Sparks and the RCM Junior Department launched in September 2009. Each year, the initiative offers a free programme of high-level tuition for children entering year 2 of primary school led by RCMJD staff and RCM student mentors. Sparks Juniors is aimed at young people from local partner schools who would not normally be able to access such an opportunity. Currently, 100% of young people on the Sparks Juniors programme are from underrepresented backgrounds.
We are looking for an exceptional teacher and musician who can bring their creative and collaborative skills to the role and work with a motivated and highly skilled team. We particularly encourage applications from Black and ethnically diverse candidates, as these groups are currently underrepresented within teaching roles at the Royal College of Music.
We are looking for candidates with the following attributes:
• You should be a widely recognised and highly respected practitioner, either as a performer or teacher.
• Able to teach young children to an exceptionally high level of technical, creative and musical proficiency, with relevant experience of teaching Kodaly, singing based activities, and/or creative projects to children aged 6-11.
• Experience of teaching music to a diverse audience through a recognised access programme.
• You should understand the particular demands of the music profession whilst striving to help each student reach the fullness of their potential.
We expect to be able to offer a minimum of 2 to 8 hours of teaching each deputising Saturday, depending on scheduling and the timetable of the JD teacher being covered.
Available from September 2023, hourly paid, Saturdays during term-time only
